Welcoming into the world of dentistry, a fun ride

Movies.....
Roll Sound... Sound Speed!
Roll Camera... rolling!
And Action!!

Welcome to the World of Dentistry.

A Few days back you were rejoicing: "Yes! I finally cleared!! I am in like really in!!"
But your fate had different plans. It shouted, "Yes that's it, stop celebrating and now focus on what you actually signed up for!!!"

First year hits you with a mountain of information unlike anything you've encountered before. Anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, dental anatomy—each subject overwhelming in its own way.

And just when you're trying to make sense of the theory, practicals begin. Cadavers, wax carving and the sudden realisation that knowing something and actually doing it are two very different things. All these subjects tighen your basics still make u question, "Why are we studying them?????"

Then finally comes the exam and result day. Yes guys!! that day that makes u realize the importance of first class and that excellent and distinction printed on your report cards from 1st to 10th standards.

And just when you think you've survived the basics, second year arrives with general pathology, microbiology, dental materials and the perfection demanded by preclinical practicals. Every subject getting as unique as u can imagine and still wondering, "Bhai, yeh sab kyun?"

To all those who were traumatized by preclinical and the perfection demanded, clinical subjects were smiling sneakily, waiting for your presence.

But it's not all scary, and somewhere along the way, things begin to click. The instrument, various equipments and all those measurements start making a bit of sense yet confusing. That's when u realize the dental materials and dentistry is not restricted to amalgam and wax, and is much more beyond that.

And bas ab kya ICC, graduation, and cap toss. And finally, movie OVER or so we thought.

Kyunki! Picture abhi baaki hai mere dost!!
Post production toh hua hi nahi!!

Run around, hunt and beg and finally get somewhere locum. 'Are re re.....! But what is this? Where did amalgam go and bhai, kidhar hai CD patients??'

You soon have to take deep breaths to digest the fact that dentistry was never about just those 4 years and 1yr internship. You have to keep learning and keep finding yourself amidst the hustle and keep reinventing as time demands.

And yes one of the most hated subject which you thought you have Said Tata, bye bye to is the one you need to have strong hold on:

"Physics"

The equipment we use, the materials we handle and the procedures we perform all have science working behind the scenes. Knowing how to perform a procedure is one thing; understanding why it works, what can affect its outcome and where its limitations lie is another.

Dental school gives us the foundation. Clinical practice keeps asking us questions that take us beyond it.

The movie wasn't over. We'd simply moved on to the next stage of production.
And this time, there's a lot more to discover.

And perhaps that is one of the most interesting things about dentistry: the more we practise, the more we realise there is still to understand.
